With the only thing constant about gasoline prices in recent days being their instability, credit card companies have been marketing credit cards that offer gas rebate rewards with more enthusiasm than ever. Are these cards really a good deal?

Maybe. Relative to other credit cards, most gas cards have exorbitant interest rates. After the introductory interest rate expires, even the best charge over 10% interest… some higher than 15%. For long term purchases, which are the purpose many use their credit cards for, these are a very unwise choice.

While the gas rebate reward may be a respectable 5%, the card may offer low, or no rewards, on other purchases. Consider what sort of rebates or rewards points you receive on your other credit cards, and use them each appropriately.

You can make a gas rebate card pay for you, if you’re careful. Because of the high interest rates, it’s necessary to pay the balance on the card off in full on a monthly basis. Never carry a balance on a card you use specifically to earn rebates on gas; the interest you pay will cost you more than enough to negate the rebates you’re earning.

And it may be wise to use the card only for gas, so you don’t accidentally overspend on it.
